در بسیاری از کشورها، سرویس های بهداشتی مربوط به باروری از نظر خدمات تنظیم خانواده برای زمانی که بخاطر عوارض سقط ناسالم تحت درمان هستند، فعال نمی باشند. این مسأله به میزان زیادی خطر حاملگی ناخواسته بعدی و سقط های ناسالم را افزایش می دهد. محققین، نظرات انجمن کارشناسان را در مورد ارتباط با این خلاء و برخورد واقع بینانه تر با این نیاز اورژانس بیان نمودند. احتمالاً زنانی که یک بار سقط کرده اند بیشتر در معرض خطر حاملگی های ناخواسته بعدی قرار دارند ولی نیازهای آنها معمولا در برنامه های تنظیم خانواده نادیده گرفته شده است. کارشناسان بهداشتی می دانند که سقط معمولا در هر فرهنگی رخ می دهد. تنها به این دلیل که هیچ روش جلوگیری از بارداری کاملا قابل اعتماد نیست، هر زن در سنین باروری می تواند با بارداری ناخواسته روبرو شود. شاید اساساً به علت فشارهای سیاسی است که سقط در طرح خدمات بهداشتی نادیده گرفته می شود. در نتیجه بسیاری از زنانی که سقط می کنند به اطلاعات لازم برای جلوگیری از بارداری دسترسی نخواهند داشت.
